  • COMPUTE!s GAZETTE

    I've often said how much I miss the old "glossy magazines" from back in the day, so I was happy to see that there's a new magazine dedicated to what we call Retro Computing.
    It's called COMPUTE!s GAZETTE, and you can check it out at:
    https://computesgazette.com

    You can download a PDF of a sample issue there, so just click on "Dive In" and scroll to the bottom of the next page to find the link.

    You can also buy the full issue, and/or subscribe to future issues there, too. It's not cheap, but I think it's a noble effort and one we should support if we can afford to. I bought the Premiere issue, and almost immediately got a full PDF, with the print issue about to be mailed out.

    By the way, it's got a nice article about FujiNet, which I've been accused of being a "cheerleader" for, and Thom Cherryhomes did a nice job of pointing out the details.

    This is awesome news! I was a subscriber to OCG for it's complete run, and like an idiot I ended up throwing them all away. Now I redeem myself a bit. I'm gonna order the print+digital #1 issue, and subscribe to just the digital issues from there.

Strangely, I'vegotten some negative feedback on a couple of local BBS'es, mostly concerned with the 1st issue being predominately Commodore-related. Considering that the C-64 out-soldmost other personal computers during its heyday, I don't think it's surprising to see that slant, especially in the 1st issue.

    And the Commodore 64 is BACK also. It's not some cheap pI based Emulation machine. It is a FPGA machine which re-creates the C64 perfectly. If anyone knows Gideon has been selling FPGA boards called the Ultimate 64, a few of the features are built in Swiftlink, WiFi, 40mhz speed, Sid Sockets and built in Sid if you can't scavenge the real chips. Full HDMI, I have had a U64 since 2019, I don't use it all that much but it is one awesome machine.. If you were a Commodorephile like I was and still am for $300 it is a great deal...

    Sooo envious. I had the complete run of CG and Compute! from '81 until about '90, all stored in those boxes you get reams of paper in, each weighting about 50 lbs. I forget how many I had, but it was in the double digits.

    Then, stupidity struck. I moved in '90 and just didn't have the space for all those boxes, so they got tossed in the bin. Yeah, I know. If I'd have been thinking, I should've kept at least one box with a select number of issues. As they say, hindsight is 20-20.

    This was great news. First Peri Fractic buys Commodore, now this. What's next, parachute pants come back in style? MTV actually shows music videos? It's a good time to be retro.

    I looked through the sample (partial) issue and was impressed with what I saw, so I bought the complete (digital) premiere issue, as well as subscribed (also digital only). It's very reminiscent of the original CG, complete with type-in programs, user group listings and everything! I was tempted to buy the print edition, but I really don't have any place for more magazines.

    I'm reading the issue now and so far I only have one complaint: Attaching a password to the PDF. Why? By that I mean, what's the point? Getting around it is simple, and completely legit. Once you have the issue open, just resave it as a PDF. Bodda-boom bodda-bing, you got an unlocked CG. No hacking required.

    I'm not finished yet, but I'm throughly enjoying the issue. I'm looking forward to the next one.

    Sorry about the mistake, what I meant is that I also don't have
    the originals (like you, I later tossed them). I have the digitized
    copies on CD. There was nothing like opening the mag and finding
    all the joy.


    ... My goal for this year was to lose just 10 pounds. Only 15 to go.

    I remember that well. I used to hit the magazine racks at several bookstores on a regular basis, just to get the latest issues of the various computer magazines available. Naturally, I got all the Commodore mags, but also some general computing ones, as well (Byte, Microcomputing, Kilobaud, Interface Age, et al). I was in heaven.
